    A Different Vision for Divorce

Divorce Doesn't Have to Look Like a Courtroom

When most people picture divorce, they picture a courtroom: two lawyers on opposite sides, a judge making decisions about a family's home, finances, and future. Liz Vaz wants people to know that divorce doesn't have to look that way.

We founded Vaz Law, PLLC with a different vision for family law, one centered on helping people move through divorce privately, respectfully, and with as much control over their own lives as possible. Today, that philosophy can be summed up simply: helping people get divorced with confidentiality, with dignity, and outside the court system.

A Mission Born From Personal Experience

Liz's commitment to helping families divorce differently is deeply personal. Growing up, she witnessed her own parents go through a traumatic and, at times, violent divorce, an experience that gave her an early understanding of how deeply family conflict can affect everyone involved. Years later, as a practicing family law attorney, she saw many of those same dynamics play out in the traditional court system. She witnessed conflict escalating, families becoming more divided, and deeply personal decisions being placed in the hands of a judge.

These experiences shaped the question that would ultimately define her practice: there has to be a better way to help families through divorce. That belief led Liz to mediation and the Collaborative Divorce model and, ultimately, to build a practice focused on helping people end their marriages without destroying their families in the process.

"When you litigate, you're ultimately asking a judge who doesn't know your family to make decisions about some of the most personal parts of your life. When people are able to reach an agreement outside of court, they have the opportunity to make those decisions for themselves."

Liz Vaz, Founder of Vaz Law PLLC

That doesn't mean couples have to agree on everything before they begin. Part of our work is helping people identify where they agree, understand where they don't, and determine whether there is a productive and appropriate path toward resolution. Depending on the family, that might mean mediation, Collaborative Divorce, or a negotiated settlement, approaches designed to resolve the legal and financial issues of divorce without turning every disagreement into a courtroom fight.

For us, staying out of court isn't simply about saving legal fees. It's about privacy, dignity, and control. At Vaz Law, the goal isn't to prepare every family for battle. It's to help people understand the different paths available to them and find the process that fits their circumstances.

The Divorce Den: Meeting People Where They Are

The Divorce Den is an extension of Liz's mission, a place for people at every stage of the journey, whether they're questioning their relationship, trying to heal, considering divorce, or ready to move forward.

Through the Divorce Den YouTube channel, Liz talks openly about relationships, healing, divorce, mediation, finances, custody, and the legal process. The content is highly educational, but it's also meant to be supportive, giving people a place to learn, feel less overwhelmed, and better understand their choices before making major decisions about their future.

For those who are ready to take the next step, the Divorce Den website offers a more streamlined and affordable way to navigate divorce in New York, with resources and options designed to make the process clearer, more accessible, and less intimidating. At its core, Divorce Den is about meeting people where they are, from the first questions about a relationship, through the decision to divorce, and into the process of healing and building what comes next.

Because for us, one of the most important conversations about divorce should happen before anyone rushes to the courthouse.
