Collaborative Divorce in Uniondale & Long Island, Dignified & Out of Court
Collaborative Divorce is a private, structured, out-of-court process that gives couples the opportunity to resolve their divorce with the support of a team specifically designed around their needs. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach, the Collaborative process can be customized to address the legal, financial, parenting, and emotional issues that are most important to your family.
Each spouse has their own Collaboratively trained attorney, but the process can include much more than legal representation. Depending on your family's needs, the team may also include a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA®) or other financial neutral, a mental health professional or divorce coach, a parenting or child specialist, or other professionals whose expertise can help you make informed decisions and move toward resolution. Not every family needs every professional, the team is built around what will best support you.
And Collaborative Divorce is not only for couples who already agree or have an easy relationship. It can be particularly valuable when there are complicated finances, difficult parenting decisions, communication challenges, significant conflict, or simply a need for more support than traditional negotiation provides. Even in some cases involving a history of domestic violence or significant power imbalances, a carefully structured Collaborative process may be possible when appropriate safeguards can be established, and the professionals determine that the process is suitable.
For couples who communicate well, Collaborative Divorce can provide the financial, legal, or parenting expertise needed to work through complex decisions. For higher-conflict couples, the structure and interdisciplinary support can help manage difficult conversations and keep negotiations productive. And for families facing a combination of financial, parenting, and emotional challenges, the team can address those issues together rather than treating each one in isolation.
The goal is not simply to reach an agreement. It is to create a process that gives both spouses the information, professional support, and space they need to make thoughtful decisions about their family and their future with greater privacy, dignity, and control over the outcome.

Collaborative Divorce FAQs
What happens if Collaborative Divorce doesn't work?
If either party withdraws to litigate, both Collaborative attorneys must disqualify themselves. This aligns everyone's incentive toward peaceful settlement.
How long does a Collaborative Divorce take in NY?
Most Collaborative divorces finish in 3 to 6 months, significantly faster than litigation.
How much does Collaborative Divorce cost compared to litigation?
Because you avoid court appearances, depositions, and trial preparation, Collaborative Divorce typically costs a fraction of contested litigation, often saving each spouse tens of thousands of dollars.
Is Collaborative Divorce confidential?
Yes. Negotiations happen in private meetings rather than public courtrooms, so your finances, parenting discussions, and personal details never become part of a public court record.
Do we need neutral experts in a Collaborative Divorce?
Many couples benefit from a neutral financial professional and a child specialist. These neutrals keep costs down by sharing one expert instead of two hired guns, and they keep discussions productive and future-focused.
Can Collaborative Divorce work if we disagree on a lot?
Yes. Part of the process is helping you identify where you agree, understand where you don't, and find a productive path forward. The structure is designed to de-escalate conflict, not require upfront agreement.
