Divorce Doesn't Have to Mean a Courtroom: Liz Vaz on a Better Way Forward

Divorce Doesn't Have to Mean a Courtroom: Liz Vaz on a Better Way Forward
    Key Takeaways
    • Divorce doesn't have to mean two lawyers, a judge, and a public courtroom battle.
    • Staying out of court is about privacy, dignity, and control, not just saving legal fees.
    • Mediation, Collaborative Divorce, and negotiated settlements each fit different families.
    • The Divorce Den meets people where they are, before anyone rushes to the courthouse.

When most people picture divorce, they picture a courtroom: two lawyers on opposite sides, a judge making decisions about a family's home, finances, and future. Elizabeth (Liz) Vaz wants people to know that divorce doesn't have to look that way.

Liz founded Vaz Law, PLLC with a different vision for family law, one centered on helping people move through divorce privately, respectfully, and with as much control over their own lives as possible.

A Mission Born From Personal Experience

Liz's commitment to helping families divorce differently is deeply personal. Growing up, she witnessed her own parents go through a traumatic and, at times, violent divorce, an experience that gave her an early understanding of how deeply family conflict can affect everyone involved. Years later, as a practicing family law attorney, she saw many of those same dynamics play out in the traditional court system: conflict escalating, families becoming more divided, and deeply personal decisions placed in the hands of a judge.

There Has to Be a Better Way

These experiences shaped the question that would ultimately define her practice: there has to be a better way to help families through divorce. That belief led Liz to mediation and the Collaborative Divorce model, and to build a practice focused on helping people end their marriages without destroying their families in the process.

    • Mediation: a neutral facilitator helps both spouses reach agreement together.
    • Collaborative Divorce: each spouse has a trained Collaborative attorney committed to settlement.
    • Negotiated settlement: for couples who largely agree and want a streamlined path.

It's About Privacy, Dignity, and Control

For Liz, staying out of court isn't simply about saving legal fees. It's about privacy, dignity, and control. When you litigate, you're ultimately asking a judge who doesn't know your family to make decisions about some of the most personal parts of your life. When people are able to reach an agreement outside of court, they have the opportunity to make those decisions for themselves.

The Divorce Den: Meeting People Where They Are

The Divorce Den is an extension of Liz's mission, a place for people at every stage of the journey, whether they're questioning their relationship, trying to heal, considering divorce, or ready to move forward. Through the Divorce Den YouTube channel, Liz talks openly about relationships, healing, divorce, mediation, finances, custody, and the legal process. The content is highly educational, but it's also meant to be supportive, giving people a place to learn, feel less overwhelmed, and better understand their choices before making major decisions about their future.

Start the Conversation Before the Courthouse

For Liz, one of the most important conversations about divorce should happen before anyone rushes to the courthouse. If you're considering divorce, or simply want to understand what your options might look like, schedule a consultation. Liz is trained in both Collaborative Divorce and mediation and practices family law in New York. She is also a certified divorce mediator in central Florida, allowing her to provide mediation services to Florida couples as well.
